How To Speed Up The Internet Working 100%

1) Caching — How  does it work and is it a good idea?
Offered by various vendors and built into Internet Explorer, caching can be very effective in many situations. Caching servers have built-in intelligence to store the most recently and most frequently requested information, thus preventing future requests from traversing a WAN/Internet link unnecessarily.
Many web servers keep a time stamp of their last update to data, and browsers such as the popular Internet Explorer will check the time stamp on the host server. If the page time stamp has not changed since the last time you accessed the page, IE will grab it and present a local stored copy of the Web page (from the last time you accessed the page), saving the time it would take to load the page from across the Internet.
So what is the downside of caching?
There are two main issues that can arise with caching:
a) Keeping the cache current. If you access a cache page that is not current then you are at risk of getting old and incorrect information. Some things you may never want to be cached, for example the results of a transactional database query. It’s not that these problems are insurmountable, but there is always the risk that the data in cache will not be synchronized with changes. I personally have been mislead by old data from my cache on several occasions.
b) Volume. There are some 100 million Web sites out on the Internet. Each site contains upwards of several megabytes of public information. The amount of data is staggering and even the smartest caching scheme cannot account for the variation in usage patterns among users and the likelihood they will hit an uncached page.
2) Protocol Spoofing
Note:  This method is applied to Legacy Data base servers doing operations over a WAN. Skip this tip if you are a home user.
Historically, there are client server applications that were developed for an internal LAN. Many of these applications are considered chatty. For example, to complete a transaction between a client and server, tens of messages may be transmitted when perhaps one or two would suffice. Everything was fine until companies, for logistical and other reasons, extended their LANs across the globe using WAN links to tie different locations together.
To get a better visual on what goes on in a chatty application, perhaps an analogy will help.  It’s like  sending family members your summer vacation pictures, and, for some insane reason, putting each picture in a separate envelope and mailing them individually on the same mail run. Obviously, this would be extremely inefficient, as chatty applications can be.
What protocol spoofing accomplishes is to fake out the client or server side of the transaction and then send a more compact version of the transaction over the Internet, i.e. put all the pictures in one envelope and send it on your behalf, thus saving you postage.
You might ask why not just improve the inefficiencies in these chatty applications rather than write software to deal with the problem? Good question, but that would be the subject of a totally different article on how IT organizations must evolve with legacy technology, which is beyond the scale of the present article.
3) Requesting text only from your browser
If you are stuck with a dial up or slower broadband connection, your  browser likely has an  option to load text only. If you are a power user that’s gaming or watching Youtube, text only will obviously have no effect on these activities, but it will speed up general browsing and e-mail.  Most web pages are loaded with graphics which take up the bulk of the load time, so switching to text only will eliminate the graphics and save you quite a bit of time.
4) Application shaping
Note: Application shaping is appropriate for corporate IT administrators and is generally not a practical solution for a home user. Makers of application shapers include Packeteer and Allot, products that are typically out of the price range for many smaller networks and home users.
One of the most popular and intuitive forms of optimizing bandwidth is a method called “application shaping,” with aliases of “traffic shaping”, “bandwidth control”, and perhaps a few others thrown in for good measure. For the IT manager that is held accountable for everything that can and will go wrong on a network, or the CIO that needs to manage network usage policies, this is a dream come true. If you can divvy up portions of your WAN/Internet link to various applications, then you can take control of your network and ensure that important traffic has sufficient bandwidth.
At the center of application shaping is the ability to identify traffic by type.  For example, identifying between Citrix traffic, streaming audio, Kazaa peer-to-peer, or something else. However, this approach is not without its drawbacks.
Many applications are expected to use Internet ports when communicating across the Web. An Internet port is part of an Internet address, and many firewall products can easily identify ports and block or limit them. For example, the “FTP” application commonly used for downloading files uses the well known “port 21″. The fallacy with this scheme, as many operators soon find out, is that there are many applications that do not consistently use a fixed port for communication. Many application writers have no desire to be easily classified. In fact, they don’t want IT personnel to block them at all, so they deliberately design applications to not conform to any formal port assignment scheme. For this reason, any product that aims to block or alter application flows by port should be avoided if your primary mission is to control applications by type.
So, if standard firewalls are inadequate at blocking applications by port, what can help?
As you are likely aware, all traffic on the Internet travels around in what is called an IP packet. An IP packet can very simply be thought of as a string of characters moving from Computer A to Computer B. The string of characters is called the “payload,” much like the freight inside a railroad car. On the outside of this payload, or data, is the address where it is being sent. These two elements, the address and the payload, comprise the complete IP packet.
In the case of different applications on the Internet, we would expect to see different kinds of payloads. For example, let’s take the example of a skyscraper being transported from New York to Los Angeles. How could this be done using a freight train? Common sense suggests that one would disassemble the office tower, stuff it into as many freight cars as it takes to transport it, and then when the train arrived in Los Angeles hopefully the workers on the other end would have the instructions on how to reassemble the tower.
Well, this analogy works with almost anything that is sent across the Internet, only the payload is some form of data, not a physical hunk of bricks, metal and wires. If we were sending a Word document as an e-mail attachment, guess what, the contents of the document would be disassembled into a bunch of IP packets and sent to the receiving e-mail client where it would be re-assembled. If I looked at the payload of each Internet packet in transit, I could actually see snippets of the document in each packet and could quite easily read the words as they went by.
At the heart of all current application shaping products is special software that examines the content of Internet packets, and through various pattern matching techniques, determines what type of application a particular flow is. Once a flow is determined, then the application shaping tool can enforce the operators policies on that flow. Some examples of policy are:
Limit AIM messenger traffic to 100kbs
Reserve 500kbs for Shoretell voice traffic
The list of rules you can apply to traffic types and flow is unlimited. However, there are downsides to application shaping of which you should be aware. Here are a few:
  • The number of applications on the Internet is a moving target. The best application shaping tools do a very good job of identifying several thousand of them, and yet there will always be some traffic that is unknown (estimated at 10 percent by experts from the leading manufacturers). The unknown traffic is lumped into the unknown classification and an operator must make a blanket decision on how to shape this class. Is it important? Is it not? Suppose the important traffic was streaming audio for a Web cast and is not classified. Well, you get the picture. Although theory behind application shaping by type is a noble one, the cost for a company to stay up to date is large and there are cracks.
  • Even if the application spectrum could be completely classified, the spectrum of applications constantly changes. You must keep licenses current to ensure you have the latest in detection capabilities. And even then it can be quite a task to constantly analyze and change the mix of policies on your network. As bandwidth costs lessen, how much human time should be spent divvying up and creating ever more complex policies to optimize your WAN traffic?
  • Techniques used in application shaping have become controversial on public networks, with privacy issues often conflicting with attempts to ensure network quality.
5) Turn off the other computers in the house
Many times, even during the day when the kids are off to school, I’ll be using my Skype phone and the connection will break up.  I have no idea what exactly the kids’ computers are doing, but if I log them off the Internet, things get better with the Skype call every time. In a sense, it’s a competition for limited bandwidth resources, so, decreasing the competition will usually boost your computer’s performance.
6) Kill background tasks on your computer
You should also try to turn off any Bittorrent or background tasks on your computer if having trouble while trying to watch a video or make a VOIP call. Use your task bar to see what applications are running and kill the ones you don’t want. Although this is a bit drastic, you may just find that it makes a difference. You’d be surprised what’s running on your computer without you even knowing it (or wanting it).
For you gamers out there this also means turning off the audio component on your games if you do not need it for collaboration. Although the audio stream
7) Test your Internet speed
One of the most common issues with slow internet service is that your provider is not giving you what they have advertised. Here is a link to our article on testing your Internet speed, which is a good place to start.
Again, while there is no way to increase your true Internet speed without upgrading your service, these seven tips can improve performance and help get better results from the bandwidth you already have. You’re paying for it, so you might as well make sure it’s being used as effectively as possible.
Note: Comcast has adopted a 15 minute Penalty box in some markets. Your initial speed tests will likely show no degradation but if you persist at watching high definition video for more than 15 minutes you may get put into their Penalty box.  This practice helps preserve a limited resource in some crowded markets we note it here because have heard reports of people happily watching You-Tube videos only to have service degrade.
8) Make sure you are not accidentally connected to a weak access point signal
There are several ways an access point can slow down your connection a bit.
If the signal between you and the access point is weak, the access point will automatically downgrade its service to a slower speed. This happens to me all the time. My access point goes on the blink (needs to be re-booted) and my computer connects to the neighbor’s with a weaker signal. The speed of my connection on the weaker signaled AP is quite variable.  So, if you are on wireless in a densely populated area, check to make sure what signal you are connected  to.
9) Deploy a fairness device to smooth out those rough patches during contentious busy hours
Yes, this is the NetEqualizer news blog, but with all bias aside, these things work great. If you are in an office sharing an Internet feed with various users, the NetEqualizer will keep aggressive bandwidth users from crowding others out. No, it cannot create additional bandwidth on your pipe, but it will eliminate the gridlock caused  by your colleague  in the next cubicle  downloading a Microsoft service pack.
Yes, there are other  devices on the market (like your fancy router), but the NetEqualizer was specifically designed for that mission.
10) Bonus tip kill your virus protection softare
With recent out break of the H1N1 virus it reminded me of  how sometimes the symptoms and carnage from a vaccine are worse than the disease it purports to cure. Well the same holds true for your virus protection software. Yes viruses are real and can take down your computer, but so can a disk crash, which is also inevitable.  You must back up your critical data regularly. However that virus software seems to dominate more resources on my desktop than anything else , I no longer use anything and could not be happier. But be sure to use a reliable back up!
11) Setting a TOS bit to provide priority
TOS bit, is a special bit, within an IP packet that directs routers to give preferential treatment to selected packets.  This sounds great , just set a bit and move to the front of the line for faster service.  As always there are limitations
- How does one set a TOS bit?
It seems that only very special enterprise  applications , like VOIP pbx’s actually set and make use of TOS bits. Setting the actual bit is not all that difficult if you have an application that deals with the NetWork layer , but most commercial applications just send their data on to the host computers clearing house for data which in turn puts it into IP packets without a TOS bit set.  After searching around for a while, I just don’t see any literature on being able to set a TOS bit at the application level. For example there are a couple forums where people mention setting the TOS bit in SKYPE but nothing definitive on  how to do it.
- Who enforces the priority for TOS packets
This is a function of routers at the edge of your network , and all routers along the path to wherever the IP packet is going. Generally this limits the effectiveness of using a TOS bit to networks that you control end to end. In other words a consumer using a public internet connection cannot rely on their provider to give any precedence to TOS bits, hence this feature is relegated to enterprise networks within an a business or institution.
-  Incoming traffic generally cannot be controlled.
The subject of when you can and can’t control a TOS does get a bit more involved. We have gone over in more detail in a separate  article.
Created by APconnections, the NetEqualizer is a plug-and-play bandwidth control and WAN/Internet optimization appliance that is flexible and scalable. When the network is congested, NetEqualizer’s unique “behavior shaping” technology dynamically and automatically gives priority to latency sensitive applications, such as VoIP and email

Pro Evolution Soccer 2012

Pro Evolution Soccer 2012

Review
Platform:
XBOX 360
Pro Evolution Soccer 2012

Pro Evolution Soccer 2012

A triumphant return to form for the only serious rival to ‘FIFA’; the new ‘Pro Evolution Soccer’ (‘PES’) has at last rediscovered its leadership qualities.
‘PES’ is back, and what a relief. Several hours in the company of this true next-generation ‘Pro Evolution Soccer’ has provided revelation after revelation. And this is only in the offline modes – online isn’t active until 29 September, after which we can revisit this page for the final word.
Before breaking it down, our overall impression of ‘PES 2012’ is that the series now stands apart in a very positive way from its nemesis ‘FIFA’. In recent years ‘PES’ has become a poor man’s ‘FIFA’, oddly because ‘FIFA’ took what ‘PES’ had previously done so well then polished it to higher standards.
Now that the real ‘PES’ has arrived we can see that it has emerged as a different beast entirely. Forgoing, right or wrong, too much extravagant in-game presentation, the focus is on the game, pure and simple. No, scratch that. We mean pure and substantially complex.
The impact is deep, but gradual. You won’t be blown away within the first hour, or even two. Give ‘PES 2012’ time to reveal its subtleties however and what begins with a thin-lipped smile transforms into a huge grin as you realise that this is a whole new game of console football.
With respect, it is still true that ‘PES’ lacks the same devotion to lower-league teams and of course disappoints with its absent Premier League licenses. But as with the ‘PES’ series classics of old, ‘PES 2012’ gives football fans reason to reconsider which of this season’s football giants to follow.
The ‘PES 2012’ offline breakdown is as follows…
All the good things
Despite clubs such as Arsenal still going by such weedy monikers as North London, player likenesses are astounding. Real Madrid’s Ozil and cover star Cristiano Ronaldo are spitting images of their real-life counterparts. Since the ‘PES’ series only features the top clubs it can afford to go the whole hog on detail and has undoubtedly done so.
But the real star is the gameplay that now encourages us to see the entire playing field in addition to head-to-head battles. Prior to ‘PES 2012’ console football felt sectionalised and idiosyncratic. By improving the artificial intelligence of individual players as well as the behaviour of teams overall, ‘PES 2012’ means that more players are aware of their roles at any one time. This is no more magnificently displayed than when struggling against Barcelona, in computer form mirroring the relentless pressing game of Guardiola’s legendary side while Messi demonstrates his trademark give and go, or else go… and keep on going until he scores.
Basically, if you love your team or fear (out of respect) your rivals, you will recognise their play style instantly in ‘PES 2012’. This is major.
While your team is in possession, new off-the-ball options allow you to encourage attacking players to make runs when you need them most, rather than waiting for somebody’s light-bulb to flash. Activating the desired runners is tricky, as with most of the clever stuff in ‘PES 2012’, but jamming the R3 (right-analogue stick) plus a direction soon feels comfortable. Main thing is that the results change the flow of gameplay so much for the better that we already can’t imagine playing without.
Similarly corner-kicks give you enhanced control of the 18-yard box by allowing you to choose the receiving player – or the guy you’d like your opponent to believe is the most dangerous. Peeling away from defenders to win a header that leads to a goal is a new skill you’ll feel proud to own.
The new ‘FIFA’ has a new physics-based system to calculate the effects of player collision, but the ‘PES 2012’ method could prove superior. It’s certainly less prone to silliness. The creative team behind ‘PES’ experimented with jostling in last year’s game, which didn’t turn out so well, but now it makes sense and the new physicality allows for not only convincing animations resulting from tackles, but believable situations where attacking players are shielding the ball or defenders use their strength to win back the ball. It has you gritting your teeth in some circumstances while buying enough time to find a man nearest the ball, and if this results in an attempt on goal it’s a small victory.
Indeed, ‘PES 2012’ is all about the small victories. It is now safe to look beyond the Champions League and League Cup modes for reasons to believe that ‘PES’ can be the equal of ‘FIFA’. This isn’t about how much the new Club Boss mode adds in terms of value (time consuming and rewarding but you’re still better off with ‘Football Manager’), or how much you’re looking forward to taking Master League online. ‘PES 2012’ very deliberately plots a new path to the future of console football, and this time doesn’t make it easy for competitors to follow.
Stuff we don’t like
Presentation within the Training Challenges is almost non-existent. We wanted to be trained, not left to figure it out for ourselves. Since ‘PES 2012’ offers such a wealth of feints and tricks, and retains its ‘mind’s eye’ approach to taking free kicks and corner kicks, more visual clues would’ve helped.
Regrettably the cut-scenes for Football Life mode look dated, and the miniscule captions that spell out the dreary dialogue only add to the low-budget feel. It’s better than having still images of blokes yelling and looking concerned during negotiations we suppose, but even so this is embarrassing.
Commentary isn’t all that impressive, but is it ever? We heard Jon Champion talk about the art of dribbling way too many times before silencing him alongside Jim Beglin. Then you can’t help notice that the crowds sound more like food rioters than football fans, with many unrecognisable chants.
We will never be truly happy until Konami brings us fully-licensed Premier League teams and home grounds. And until ‘PES’ can bring us every league club in the country, or even the Championship would be a start, many thousands of fans are forced to consult the edit mode. Admittedly the edit mode remains the best in class… if only it didn’t need to be this way.
Should you buy it?
We’re going out on a limb to say that ‘PES 2012’ is the very best in the series, and everything this suggests to fans that have weathered the worst of it. The success of this new game’s online suite such as Facebook integration and establishing private leagues is yet to be decided. However for games against pals in the same living room, rest assured there is a wealth of authentic top-notch football to explore.

gears of Wars 3 review

Gears of War 3

Why this series now stands alone as the most electrifying, pulse-pounding and boldly outlandish shooting spree around with gameplay as tight as a fighter’s fist.
‘Gears of War 3’ is the reason we still need blockbusters on kick-ass games consoles. Sure, not all studios turn out games as polished and overwhelmingly entertaining as Epic Games, but while a few of them still can we’ll take the likes of this over iPhone Apps for as long as we shall live.
Here is where the ‘Gears of War’ trilogy concludes. We doubt it’ll mean the end of the series overall, but for now this is where Delta Squad wraps up duties as protectors of mankind against the Locust; subterranean beasts that have emerged to claim the surface of Delta Squad’s home planet Sera.
The surprise package is a new enemy type called the Lambent, basically Locust mutated with planet Sera’s highly volatile energy fuel ‘Imulsion’. Consequently Lambent types are much more powerful (faster, stronger, tougher) and tend to explode. They also enjoy chucking JCB excavator size handfuls of Imulsion at cowering soldiers, introducing an urgency to move often and fast between the cover and shoot mechanic that ‘Gears…’ is famous for.
The balance of great value content in ‘Gears of War 3’ in terms of lifetime enjoyment will most likely be on multiplayer, a sign of the times. It has been important for Epic to get this element locked down in order to stay relevant beyond a 10-12 hour campaign. Even so, the four-player co-op experience could prove just as compelling for buddies reliving stand-out moments and investigating new routes.
Both Campaign and Multiplayer diversions in ‘Gears of War 3’ offer breathless entertainment. Here’s the breakdown, both good and bad… though we cannot find much of the latter we must admit.
All the good things
Starting in the engine room, the core gameplay has received a significant boost. This is a sequel that improves from the inside out. Bear that in mind when you see how good it all looks on the surface.
In Campaign, the Lambent shake things up with projectiles at range and explosions up close. Since they’re mutants the hit-points are varied too, so it’s not always body shots and headshots, there are tendrils and throbbing sacks requiring careful aim.
Each mission focuses on a new weapon or tool with which to get the job done, there are more wide open spaces to consider too, encouraging a balance of long-range and close-quarters tactics. You’re constantly busy switching between guns and grenades while experimenting with e.g. The Digger Launcher. If you don’t already know about this we’re not about to ruin the fun for you.
Relevant to Campaign but more obvious in multiplayer, it is now possible to vault over objects while kicking enemies to stagger them. This keeps the playing field active and prevents daft jack-in-the-box duels where one player hopes to time his shotgun strike a split-second before the other guy.
Visually ‘Gears of War 3’ squeezes more out of Xbox 360 than we imagined possible. The sense of scale can be breathtaking while detail up close is off the chart. Huge beasts stomp and tear and chew their way through human defences. The animation is superb, adding menace spiced with humour to the creatures’ gait. Likewise the rousing musical score is enough to make anyone feel ready for battle against seemingly impossible odds. It’s just mesmerising, the whole thing.
British author Karen Traviss keeps Campaign buzzing with rip-roaring one-liners balanced with serious comments when the situation allows. It’s not often we can say this about a scriptwriter’s involvement with a pure action game, but the dialogue brings so much to the experience overall.
Campaign is a hefty 10-12 hours long, depending on the difficulty you choose and the skill of any co-op buddies. The Artificial Intelligence of remaining Delta Squad comrades is otherwise excellent, indeed very quick to respond whenever you find yourself injured. You’ve a fantastically varied and tactically contrasting ride ahead in which choke points are fun to break down. There are multiple routes, not always spelled out, testing your gamer skill in different ways. The new arsenal of weapons gleefully exemplifies the brutal though tongue-in-cheek nature of the entire series.
Multiplayer is mostly exceptional; endlessly entertaining in a last-man standing variation of Team Deathmatch, and trailblazing with Capture the Leader (like Capture the Flag but with players taken hostage). The ability to ‘spot’ rivals, marking their positions for teammates to zone in on, means that you’re always involved in the success or victory. You feel more in command on the battle field.
Horde Mode in ‘Gears of War 2’ paved the way for Firefight in ‘Halo 3: ODST’ and Spec Ops in ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’. Horde Mode 2.0 introduced by ‘Gears of War 3’ combines Tower-Defence strategy with the business of survival against increasingly terrifying odds. It’s broadly similar to the new Survival mode for Spec Ops in ‘Modern Warfare 3’ but with ‘Gears…’ humour (which you could also read as gallows humour) to liven things up. Various turret guns and spiked obstacles, purchased using EXP, are easily placed but require strategic thought. Cardboard cut-outs of Cole Train distract numbskull Horde Drones, an example of how the gore-fest stays light hearted. It’s genius.
Most compelling of all about the ‘Gears of War 3’ package is the tracking system that constantly rewards any skill-based challenge with medals and ribbons used to decorate your online profile. Quite apart from the enjoyment you’ll get simply from playing, any time spent investing in your ‘Gears of War 3’ career is worthwhile because it is officially glorified.
Stuff we don’t like
If we’re nit-picking, possibly Beast Mode is the weakest addition to the series, not the New Favourite pastime we had built hopes for. Beast Mode is kind of the opposite of Horde Mode, only you play as the Locust and Lambent horde, starting with Tickers to chew through razor-wire defences all the way up to Lambent Berserkers to terrify the Gears heroes that gradually increase in number. Sadly Beast Mode is short-lived because the monsters are so powerful. If you have a decent team of players you’ll unlock everything and know how to back the Gears heroes into a corner within a few hours.
Possibly the assistance of the AI team-mates makes even Hardcore Mode simple to plough through in Campaign. The difference in challenge is noticeable, and some players may really struggle to figure out where they’re going wrong, but we expect experienced gamers will turn to Insane for something that’ll make you genuinely fearful. We only point this out because until now ‘Gears of War’ has been a formidable opponent from Normal upwards… although partly because team-mate AI used to suck.
While it’s true that this is the most accessible ‘Gears of War’ game in the trilogy, it can never really be the every-man shooter that games like ‘Call of Duty’ and ‘Battlefield’ have become. Fans love it because it’s so crazy. Casual onlookers may need to flick a mental switch to get what’s going on.
Should you buy it?
It’ll blow your head off.

Given how important building is to them, it's amazing how unkind most strategy games are to the noble art of construction. Click an icon, pop a little wireframe grid somewhere and boom - there's your neatly pre-fab base. Obviously, you don't want to hang around rotating walls and admiring how happy your workers look in the middle of a war against an unspeakable alien menace that means to extinguish all life, but once in a while it'd be nice to indulge your inner architect too. Stronghold 3, at least, means to indulge the exterior decorator in you.

Castle-building series Stronghold (the first game in which outsold GTA 3… in Germany) has been biding its time for a few years, following a mixed reception to the second game and its UK creators Firefly experimenting with other projects for a while. Now it's back for a full-on third instalment, with the long wait meaning a huge jump in graphical quality. More on that shortly, but perhaps the more important change is a back-to-basics approach.

Stronghold 2 was, by Firefly's own admission, a sequel more about feature creep than actual improvement to the formula. The offered fantasy was constructing a whacking great medieval castle then raising an army to tear down an opponent's stone fortress. The reality was that you spent so much time fighting minor fires within your own walls - such as curbing petty crime - that it was maddeningly tricky to focus on bringing iron justice to opposing castle-lords. Stronghold 3 gets back to the singular joy of diligently constructing a big bloody castle, replete with its own economy and populace, with the better bits of the second game brought back to the fold in theory without the excessive micro-management.

The move to a modern-day engine - in fact, the same one used in Ubisoft's great-looking if over-fiddly last Settlers game - makes all the difference. Placing buildings and walls is no longer limited to a fixed grid with fixed angles, but allows freeform construction, regardless of how insane or defensively useless the results may be. Reap what you sow, and if what you sowed was an enormous teddy bear shape with a vulnerable gap in its left ear - well, expect trouble.

A new weather system and day/night cycle means the likes of flickering torchlights adding atmosphere to a gloomy evening, while the reasonably large infantry battles feature each soldier up to his own distinct, tangibly combative thing rather than eerily raising and lowering his sword in perfect synchronicity with his mates.

It's potentially the night sieges that really show the game at its best, as well as introducing a neat new take on fog of war. Here, the dark cloud that's proven such a staple of strategy games is, quite, literally, darkness. If you don't want to be caught unawares by an invading force stealing over in the dead of night, you'll need to build watchtowers around your castle's perimeter, then have your archers set them alight with flaming arrows - casting back the otherwise total darkness. A few peasants roaming around with torches will open up a few extra bright spots too.

Barracks are useful for defending your kingdom. Windmills not so much.

Of course, you'll get to storm castles yourself, either at night or in broad daylight. Getting to unleash the heavy weapons - for instance catapults - shows off Stronghold 3's procedural wall generation. Now, 'procedural wall generation' might just be the most boring phrase in the English language, but in practice it means smacking the side of a castle with a bloody great rock, and watching it collapse into a shower of stony fragments. Walls collapse slowly and convincingly, rather than as sudden removals of pre-determined chunks. If it all comes to pass as it did in the demo levels we saw, there should be a good sense that this is *your* fight, a singular battle where you're desperately focused on eating away (or defending) a particular section of slowly crumbling wall you'll then rush a horde of sword-wielding nutters through.

Well, unless the enemy rolls a load of burning logs downhill at you, or you run over some stake traps that skewer your guys on giant wooden spikes, or maybe just find yourself on the toothy end of a pack of dogs who aren't in an altogether good mood after spending several days locked in cage without being fed. This is not a gentleman's war. There are plenty of ways to get your own back, however, with our personal favourite so far being catapulting a sack full of diseased badgers behind enemy lines. If you're out of badgers, why not try a cow or some sheep?

If your heart leaped at the initial talk of this being a construction game but then fell at the mention of taking to the battlefield, fear not. Stronghold 3 will feature a second singleplayer campaign, whose challenges are purely those of managing your economy. There'll be eight of these missions, in which you can focus on building the best castle possible without having to worry about invaders knocking at your door, on top of a 17-mission military campaign and assorted multiplayer modes. There'll also be a clutch of historical missions - while Stronghold 3 proper centres on the surprise return of first game's apparently slain big bad The Wolf, these challenges recreate famed real castles for you to attack or defend.

Stronghold 3's visuals are sumptuous compared to previous iterations.

On top of that will be a full-featured map editor, and a system to share your creations or download others. Stronghold has been something of a perennial for a certain community, so Firefly seem pretty invested in making the third game hang around for quite some time too. It's shipping with Steamworks support, and will also feature a scoring system whereby you can compare your castle sieging exploits to fellow players the world over. If, as is likely, you find yourself to be a mere minnow on the world stage, you can drill down the scope of the high score chart - to the UK, to the South of the UK, to a particular region… You'll find a level at which becoming top dog is perfectly plausible, so the rankings have meaning for the majority of players and not just the frightening kings of the global castle.

It's been a long time coming, but Stronghold 3 looks as though it's more than able to defend itself against fading memories and concerns that it's too complicated by half. There's plenty of complication in there - for instance, a vast array of factors, from tax to crappy weather, that affect your populace's happiness and efficiency - but it doesn't appear to have 'castle gonks only' painted on its towering battlements. The last year has perhaps not been all too kind to strategy games, but now we're just a few months away from something that promises to be meaty and elaborate without skimping on the flashy, more superficial elements. With a beta due next month, at least we've not long to wait to find out whether these walls are definitely worth storming.
